Artist's Comments

I am re-submitting this for a couple of reasons. First,..... the previous photo/scan was terrible. Second,... let's honor the greatest band ever; Megadeth!! :D ;) (I'm so against fan-art, but I had to make an exception here. hehehe)
Gigantour was pretty cool, BUT.......the sound system was kinda mediocre, and there was a curfew. So.... although the performance was good, it was hurried in order to fit in as many songs as possible. I first heard Megadeth play in a small venue, and it was one of the best musical experiences for me. It just plain ROCKED! Unforgetable fusion. That's the only way I can describe it.

I was going through my sketchbooks, happened to find this drawing, so I took a new photo. I drew this many years ago from a reference photo in Hit Parader Magazine. I used a mechanical pencil. Although not the best drawing (proportions may be off here and there), I really like the way I put the lines together to create shadows. I remembered that's how I used to shade everything back then. Pretty good method/style, so I'm not sure why I stopped. The drawing is a little smaller than the full-view.

Oh, how awesome! I'm glad you had fun at the Gigantour... so jealous, wish I could've seen some of those bands. tee hee. Anyways, it's a good tribute to Dave.

Alright, I have to say right off that, from the day I started drawing with pen and ink, I've been a sucker for uniform hatching like this. It creates a rhythm and a texture that has a life of its own, and which seems to hide behind the image you create. I've done it a few times with the ink drawings, and I've almost always loved the result. This is a really good use of it, and I must point out how thoughtful (or just intuitive) it was to have the lines going in the direction he is looking. It creates a psychological movement to it. This is really good, especially for something in a "sketchbook." Just accept it: you're really good. No arguing with me. ;)

Oh please,... you know I'll never give in. ;) The day I do, it will be the end to my improvement. :fear: I have to admitt though,... that cross-hatching does impress me, mostly because I don't think I'd be able to replicate it today. Those were the days when I spent hours drawing, every day. In fact that's one of the things I really love about your ink drawings! That's what pulls me back for more (aside from all the other stunning stuff you do with ink). I'm thinking I may have studied DaVinci's drawings back then, and picked up on that cross-hatching.

You know,.... since they played on a College Campus, they wouldn't allow them to have 8 bands playing. :pissed: They had to cut it down to like 6 instead,... and of course the curfew. Dave really kicked ass, and did his best to give the audience the best show possible under those circumstances. The other bands were great too. Whenever I heard the electric guitars (especially the solos), my insides started to melt. :D Damn... there's just something about them.

 I never win... :cries: Okay, I apologize in advance for this, but I must clarify this little bit of semantics here. Now, by "hatching," I'm referring to the parallel lines used throughout for shading, like these //////. "Cross-hatching" is where the lines go in two different directions, like these ###, right? The "Rats" stuff is FULL of cross-hatching, but pure hatching like you've done here you won't find in much of my online stuff, save for "Naglfar," which is my favorite such work in my stuff. I don't mean to start yet another argument here with this, because I'm tired of losing everything everytime... ;)

What a delight this is! All this inventing, this producing, takes place in a pleasing, lively dream.

Shading is gorgeous. I particularly love that gleam in his eye. That's something I need to get the hang of. It almost makes him seem more.. swept up in a moment. You should do portraits more often. ;)

Yeah.... sorry about that, I did mean "hatching",... not cross-hatching. *Dohhh!* You win this one. :D
